Virtual-meeting platform Zoom has A.I. features through its AI Companion 2.0, which is basically a suite of A.I. services that help both inside and outside of meetings.

The Five Most Key Takeaways from This Blog

  • If the Zoom Team Chat during a meeting becomes surfeit with unread messages, then AI Companion 2.0 can offer a quick overview of some of the more salient points.
  • Perplexity, the company behind an A.I. search engine of the same name, has partnered with Zoom, the company behind the virtual-meeting platform of the same name. Perplexity’s partnership with Zoom will make it easier to retrieve information within Zoom during meetings.
  • Incorporating data from external platforms like Gmail and Google Calendar and makes accessing
  • Quickly retrieving Microsoft Office files uploaded to Zoom can be another perk.
  • A.I.-generated meeting summaries can in turn be used as the basis for A.I.-generated Zoom Tasks.

A.I.-ifying Zoom

The trend for many major big-name Big Tech companies is to see just how much of those companies’ respective platforms can be A.I.-ified.

The goal in most cases is to basically make the user experience resemble navigating a store where a tireless and unfailingly servile worker is at hand and ready to meet a number of your requests.

Things are no different for Zoom, which for many companies is a staple for both internal meetings and chats with clients, among others. A.I.-ifying the platform takes the form of having an at-your-word A.I. that will perform a variety of tasks.

Your Personal Assistant—Companion, Rather

The phrase “personal assistant” is frequently thrown around by companies that offer A.I. features on the companies’ respective platforms.

The phrase is indeed somewhat apt, although of course part of the gambit inherent in that language is that it encourages users to feel in power over the A.I. And since personal assistants tend to be human (have you ever seen a canine secretary?).

However, the word “companion” definitely has non-human implications (people will indeed refer to their pets as companions who will fetch tennis balls just as AI Companion will fetch information from previous Zoom calls), and linking it with “AI” is also strategic in distancing from the anthropomorphizing aspects.

Zoom’s decision to name its platform “AI Companion” places the company firmly in the camp of companies that wish to give customers the impression of having access to a subservient and friendly entity ready to do their bidding.

Zoom is not the only company that uses the word “companion”, as Microsoft refers to Copilot as an A.I. companion

Basically, the idea that these companies wish to impart by using phrases like “assistant” and “companion” is that using A.I. on those companies’ platforms will be like having at your beck and call a personal lifelike servant that will quickly fulfill your requests.

Real-Time Web Search Thanks to a Partnership with Perplexity

Getting to a respectable position in the A.I. world as a start-up can be notoriously hard, but the A.I. search engine Perplexity is one of those little-engine-that-could stories of entrepreneurship.

Though the company is not without its troubles, the fact remains that it has forged partnerships with many major tech companies, including Microsoft and, yes, Zoom.

As detailed in the Key Takeaways section above, this will allow Zoom users to quickly access up-to-date information from the web during a Zoom call.

That can be an added convenience, as traditionally a user would have to either switch to the browser to search something pertinent to the meeting. The major benefit.

Users can indeed get citations and sources for AI Companion’s response, but of course the burden is on them to actually verify whether the information is correct or not.
