Perplexity AI is a company that creates a gen-A.I. search engine that resembles a knowledgeable chatbot. It has managed to become a significant name in A.I. $9 billion was the valuation in a recent funding round, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Five Most Key Takeaways from This Blog Post

  • Part of the attraction from investors comes from a search engine that could lessen Google’s grip on the search sphere.
  • That, in turn, could lead to more competitive prices for things like advertising on search engines, attracting more businesses to spend money there.
  • Or, it could simply widen the number of channels through which consumers seek information and, in turn, see advertisements. That could lead to additional spending on advertising.
  • Perplexity AI is not without its troubles, however. Like many companies that develop gen-A.I. tools, it has to deal with legal pressures surrounding copyright infringement in training data
  • Overall, this technology is another example in the evolving world of search, where S.E.O. is becoming A.I.O. (i.e., A.I. optimization).

The Next Big Name in Search?

Yes, the world of tech is more risk-taking than most other industries.

For this reason, there is always some startup trying to gain momentum in someone’s garage.

Some of these startups become little engines that could, gaining momentum and possibly joining the Silicon Valley version of the A-list.

Perplexity is one such company. In an era of A.I. development that is marked by the largest “legacy” corporations (Google, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, IBM, to name a few) rule A.I. development, either by in-house R&D or outright purchasing and assimilating A.I. startups, Perplexity AI has managed to go rise to the A-list.

However, that took some large investments from massively influential tech-world entities like Nvidia and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

A.I.O., or, the Next Step in S.E.O.

Something key to take away from this blog post is that whether or not Perplexity AI is able to keep its momentum in the tech world and become a major company, the technology it is working on is of wide interest in the tech world.

Google is working on its own version of a gen-A.I. search engine. ChatGPT search is an offering by OpenAI.

Generative artificial intelligence in search is a glimpse of the future of search engines.

What this involves is using gen A.I.—a form of A.I. that creates content like text, images, video, and the like, all based on simple prompts—creating S.E.R.P.’s that look like comprehensive, multimedia answers to questions.

A highly stimulating gestalt of embedded videos, bullet-point lists, images, visual graphs, and the like will become mainstays of search.

Underneath it all is the same service: A.I. takes a prompt “query” and provides an answer.

The significant difference in the next generation of search engines, or gen-A.I. search engines (has anyone coined “search gengines” yet?) is that the answers will change.

In some cases, they may indeed be more comprehensive. In other cases, the efforts to make S.E.R.P.’s look exhaustively comprehensive may only give the impression of a better answer, when in reality there may just be a lot of padding around the actual searched-for answer.

This effort to make search more visually stimulating and information-dense overall could be consequential in keeping people interested in using search engines, as A.I. services like Siri will get better and better at providing pithy immediate responses to queries.

The breadth of information, then, will be a draw, especially in cases where the searcher needs a more complex answer that Siri could not sum up in a sentence.

Oh, and another thing to understand is that advertising will still be big on these engines.
