The Five Most Key Takeaways from This Blog Post

  • Meta has been forging ahead with its plans to make the Metaverse happen, despite a largely lukewarm response from most of the public. However, recent integrations of A.I. into Metaverse hardware could strengthen the appeal to a significant number of people.
  • If the technology becomes more popular, it could readily change the way people search for and purchase consumer products and services in both the digital and real world. This, of course, matters for businesses with digital or physical stores.
  • To shake the association with those huge goggles, the company has been showcasing Orion, augmented-reality (A.R.) glasses that look like 3D glasses (the kind that look a bit like cheap sunglasses, rather than the classic ones with the red-and-blue lenses).
  • Not Metaverse-related, but a notable recent A.I. power move by Meta involves interweaving A.I.-generated content custom-tailored into the Facebook and Instagram feeds of those platforms’ users based on their browsing history.
  • The lingering question for business owners, however, is how soon this technology may become a reality. Will it even become popular? Perhaps it all depends on how fashionable the glasses can become.

Meta’s Plans to Include A.I.-generated Additions in Your Social-Media Feed

Soon, a scroll through Facebook or Instagram will feature A.I.-generated photos inserted into the feed. Some of these photos, which are based on the scroller’s browsing history, may even feature the scroller’s face.

As users scrolling through these feeds become continually desensitized to all manner of content, the idea is that seeing a photo of their own face will be something that manages to grab attention the way once-stimulating content once did.

(Snapchat is also experimenting with using A.I. to create ads featuring users’ MySelfies.)

And the Chatbot’s Name Is John Cena

Yes, chatbot assistants with the voices of celebrities are a product offering from Meta. Awkwafina and John Cena (a nice rhyming pair) and Dame Judi Dench are among your options for voice-chatbot buddies.

It would indeed be a boon to business owners, as users may use Meta AI chatbots to find out information about products and services.

A largely new, perhaps inadvertent marketing boost for companies, in that users may feel more inclined to purchase a product if an A.I. chatbot with a celebrity’s voice is offering information about it. (Let’s not pretend any of us are above being swayed by the voice of John Cena A.K.A. The Prototype A.K.A. Mr. P into feeling positive sentiments about a product or service.)

Audio Translations

Putting on the Orion glasses and getting a real-time A.I. machine translation of conversations in foreign languages.

However, the writer of this blog post has a question, if permitted: What if the user is in a busy street with multiple conversations going on—how would the user get the glasses to focus in on one conversation in particular? Maybe a brain-chip integration or other form of brain–computer interface (B.C.I.) could aid in that….

Regardless, people could certainly be interested in a pair of glasses that could make a trip to a foreign country feel much more immersive through A.I. translation. If the people in that country also have the glasses, then communication could be pretty easy for tourists.

For business owners, this could make for exciting possibilities in selling products to an expanded customer base that includes customers that speak foreign languages.

World Descriptions

One of the key areas that A.I. is set to really shine in is in improving assistive technologies.

Integrating the Orion glasses with A.I. that can describe the world in real time can be a major perk to people with vision impairments, potentially making it easier to navigate the world.

Of course, people without any vision impairments may find plenty of uses for a technology that could, say, I.D. all the kinds of flora and fauna that you encounter on a walk in a park.

This invites questions about integrating consumer products into the world-description algorithms’ data set. Can business owners openly submit their products to Meta to include in the A.I.’s vocabulary, or will machine-learning algorithms take care of that by continually integrating data from the web, which may include product descriptions.
