Meta is planning on making its ChatGPT competitor product, LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta A.I.) available to the public, according to the New York Times.
At least, semi-public; you need to be approved by Meta to access the code for LLaMA.
How Does Meta Benefit from Making Its A.I. Project Open Source?
In that above-cited New York Times article, a Meta spokesperson said that one of the hindrances to A.I. progress currently is the tendency of OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT) and Google (whose chatbot, Bard, is also high-profile) to keep their A.I. developments secret.
There are obvious motivations for this. For one, tech companies that fail to keep a lid on their A.I. work are unlikely to create a product that can compete with others’ work.
If Google and Apple knew OpenAI’s code for creating ChatGPT, then they likely would have created chatbots that would have blown ChatGPT out of the water, thanks to those companies’ huge amounts of talent and resources.
But, the downside is that A.I. innovation may actually be slowed by keeping developments under wraps. Hence, Meta’s decision to involve the public in A.I. development can actually accelerate progress, as plenty of talented programmers, even hobbyists, who do not work for big-name tech firms, still have a lot to offer.
Another benefit for Meta is that the public may actually help improve their own product, and pretty much all for free. Strange as it may sound, some programmers are willing to do quite a lot of work pro bono, so long as they get digital recognition for their contributions. Also, who knows, making a significant contribution to LLaMA could lead to a position at a big-name tech firm down the line.
Meta’s A.I. for Business Owners
However, Meta’s A.I. platform may not be ideal for business owners, unless they have a programming skillset and ample time to make Meta’s A.I. platform their own.
Also, individuals must join Meta’s waiting list and receive approval from Meta to develop A.I. (Meta vets individuals to reduce the risk of bad actors gaining access to this powerful A.I. tool).
But don’t worry, because there is still a much more user-friendly A.I. that business owners can use, and another big-name tech company, IBM, is developing it.
IBM Is Developing Watsonx, User-Friendly A.I. That You Can Easily Tailor to Your Own Business
You may have heard of IBM Watson, which has long been the most popular A.I. platform for business owners worldwide. One reason for this is that it is specifically tailored for business owners, making this a true B2B A.I. product.
IBM has been working to bring a next-gen Watson to business owners, under the project name Watsonx.
Watsonx will allow you to easily customize A.I. platforms, such as generative A.I. that can write content for you, with your own business’ unique data, so that you will get a personalized A.I. assistant that is helpful for many tasks.
Though Watsonx has not been released just yet, Watson is available to business owners right now. Learn more about how this powerful prediction platform, which includes a chatbot that can speak to your customers, can grow your business today.
