For years and years, Bing was the butt of many search-engine jokes. Most of the time, the punchline was yet another variation of the old truism that nobody uses Bing, while everyone and their mother uses Google.
But nobody at Google was laughing when Samsung began to consider making Bing the default search engine on all of its devices.
The reason? Microsoft, the creator of Bing, had implemented conversational computing into its search engine. Using Bing, then, will become like a conversation with ChatGPT.
Google Is Going to Work on AI
Only AI could have stirred Google from resting on its search-dominant laurels.
Bard, which was meant to be Google’s answer to ChatGPT, did not get much of a reaction. The response was mostly lukewarm because, well, ChatGPT did it first.
Right now, over 160 people at Google are working on Magi, a project dedicated to creating a competitor to the “New Bing”, the New York Times reports.
When, and Where, Will the New Google Be Available?
As soon as next month, a limited number of users—said to be around 1 million people—will be able to test out Google’s Magi project. From there, more and more people will be able to use it. Google estimates that around 30 million people will be given access to the search engine at the end of 2023.
As of right now, this technology will only be available to people in the United States of America.
The Future of Online Advertising with Chatbot-ified Search Engines
One of the biggest worries for people in SEO is whether search engines that resemble chatbots will pose a significant challenge to SEO efforts.
Part of the reason is that the chatbots will be programmed to only offer information from the most established, prestigious, and well-known sources. So, a small business writing a blog about home improvement may be less likely to be cited by Google’s search chatbot than a blog by the more established Home Depot.
So, will there even be room for advertising at all on the platform, if people will just have the information directly delivered?
The good news is that Google is still planning to place ads on its search engine. Part of the reason is that a huge amount of Google’s revenue comes from ads.
If you ask Google’s search engine to write you some code or write you a memo, then an advertisement will likely be shown below the generated content.
What Other Tools Will Google Have Available?
That New York Times article cited above offers more information about other AI-related projects that Google is working on. Most of these involve conversational computing.
Tivoli Tutor is one of them. This is a conversational computing platform that will help you learn foreign languages. Imagine DuoLingo crossed with ChatGPT.
Searchalong allows you to constantly have a chatbot following you around your Internet browsing so that you can ask questions about what you see. For instance, if you are on Netflix and see a movie you may be interested in watching, you can ask Searchalong to fetch you some reviews from critics so that you can decide whether it is worth watching or not.
