ChatGPT’s release last November was the opening shot to an AI race that is still ongoing.

Major tech companies like Google and Microsoft and Meta are all racing to create the most innovative, and profitable, conversational computing platform.

Google’s rival to ChatGPT (newly updated as GPT-4) is called Bard. It was expected that Bard would be available by the end of this year, but Silicon Valley workers have been burning the midnight oil apparently because Bard is already here

Is Bard Better than ChatGPT?

Google has tried to distinguish itself from Microsoft’s ChatGPT by emphasizing the importance of designing a responsible chatbot that will not lie or spread misinformation.

Of course, this is the goal of any chatbot creator. But Google of course already doubtless knows that this is much easier said than done.

Google’s CEO has outright said that users should expect to see some errors

Bard Has Too Many Potential Problems for Businesses

You are more than likely to see Google’s Bard make the same mistakes that its rival, GPT-4, has already publicly made again and again.

This includes “hallucination”, where the chatbot will say things that are patently untrue, such as Elvis being alive. (To the best of our knowledge, no chatbot has gone on record to say whether Elvis is alive or not.)

There is actually more risk of inaccuracy with Bard, because it has been reported by users with early access to Bard that it does not cite its sources often.

Hallucination makes it easy to spread misinformation.

A lack of common sense also puts these ask-me-anything chatbots at risk of saying something offensive.

Why You Should Not Use Google Bard (or ChatGPT) for Your SEO Efforts

A quick AI parable:

Big tech company puts out a chatbot. That big tech company says to the public, “Go ahead, use the chatbot.”

People are amazed at what the chatbot is able to do. Businesses in particular begin using the chatbot to write copy for social and website SEO efforts.

However, the chatbot begins to hallucinate, spouting out grammatical and factual nonsense.

Soon, it becomes a struggle for businesses to effectively use the chatbot for anything but the simplest forms of communication.

And so, human copywriters are used yet again.

End of AI parable.

The hidden meaning of this parable is that companies like Google and AI are not doing businesses a favor by letting anyone use their chatbots for free.

In fact, it is the other way around.

If your business uses a chatbot like Bard, then you are essentially becoming a guinea-pig product tester for Google. At this stage of Bard’s existence, Google is more interested in identifying weak spots in Bard so that they can be fixed. Making sure that your AI-generated content ranks is not high-priority, although it may be once Google starts charging you money for Bard’s services.

Your Company’s Chatbot Should Be IBM Watson

There is a strong case for not using Bard or ChatGPT for your business. However, there is a third option in the form of IBM Watson, which was specifically designed and tested to be used in business contexts—and has been used by a wide variety of industries for over a decade now.
